Eating after a sleeve gastrectomy progresses step by step as the stomach heals. Timing and content can vary between clinics; your dietitian's and physician's plan applies.
General stages
- Liquid stage: water, clear liquids and drinks your physician recommends in the first days and weeks
- Purée stage: soft, mashed or puréed foods
- Soft solid stage: a gradual move to soft solid foods
- Normal eating: a balanced pattern in small portions
Key habits
- Small portions and eating slowly
- Chewing well
- Taking liquids between meals, not during them
- Prioritising protein-rich foods
Supplements and follow-up
Vitamin and mineral supplements and regular blood tests may be needed. Follow-up with your physician and dietitian matters.
Things to consider
Contact your physician for nausea, vomiting, pain or being unable to take fluids. Eating quickly and very fatty or sugary foods can cause discomfort.
