Gum disease is inflammation of the tissues around the teeth and is often painless in its early stage, so it can go unnoticed.
Stages
- Gingivitis: redness, swelling and bleeding when brushing. It can be reversed with regular cleaning.
- Periodontitis: inflammation spreads to the bone and tissues that hold the teeth; gum recession, loose teeth and bad breath can occur.
Risk factors
- Poor oral hygiene and plaque build-up
- Smoking
- Systemic conditions such as diabetes
- Genetic predisposition
Treatment
- Professional scaling
- Deep cleaning (curettage) and, if needed, surgical treatment
- Regular check-ups, and correct brushing and flossing at home
If your gums keep bleeding, see a dentist; early treatment is important for keeping your teeth.
