The first wash after a hair transplant is one of the steps people ask about most. Timing and technique can differ between clinics; your clinic's written instructions always come first.
General approach
- The first wash usually takes place in the first days, at the clinic or by the method shown to you.
- Water pressure is not aimed directly at the transplanted area; lukewarm water and foam are applied gently.
- Instead of rubbing, scratching with nails or towelling vigorously, the area is dried lightly.
Things to watch
- Use the shampoo and lotion your physician recommends.
- Avoid very hot water, saunas and pools.
- Do not pull off scabs; wait for them to fall away on their own.
The donor area
The back of the head should also be washed gently and the ointments your physician recommends applied.
Tell the clinic if redness increases or discharge or pain develops.
