All-on-4 is a treatment in which a fixed prosthesis is placed on usually four implants for a whole jaw. It is an option for people who have lost most of their teeth or are about to.
Who may be a candidate?
- People missing many teeth in the upper or lower jaw
- People unhappy with removable dentures
- People with enough bone to carry the implants, or who can reach that with bone support
Factors such as gum disease, smoking and poorly controlled diabetes can affect success and should be mentioned at the assessment.
How does the process work?
- Examination, panoramic X-ray and, if needed, a CT scan
- Digital planning and deciding implant positions
- Surgical placement of the implants
- In most plans, a temporary fixed prosthesis, then a permanent one after healing
The time between the temporary and permanent prosthesis varies with the person and plan.
Advantages
- A steadier chewing feel than with removable dentures
- Restoration of a wide area with fewer implants
Things to consider
Oral hygiene and regular check-ups are critical for the life of the implants. Follow physician advice about hard foods and habits.
Alternatives
All-on-4 may not be the best method for everyone; implant bridges or plans with more implants are also considered.
