What is bichectomy (cheek fat removal)? Who is it for and how is recovery?

Bichectomy removes the buccal fat pad found on the inner side of the cheek. The aim is a more defined line in the lower-middle part of the face.

Who may be a candidate?

  • People whose face looks full because of the fat tissue inside the cheek
  • Adults in good general health with realistic expectations

It is not right for every face shape. In an already slim face, or with advancing age and the risk of hollow cheeks, physicians may advise against it.

How is it done?

The procedure is usually performed under local anaesthesia, sometimes with sedation. A small incision is made inside the mouth and the fat tissue is removed, so there is no visible scar on the face. The procedure is generally short.

Recovery

  • Swelling and tenderness are possible in the first days.
  • Soft, lukewarm food is recommended, with careful oral hygiene.
  • The final look settles as swelling subsides, over several weeks to months.

Things to consider

As with any surgery there are risks such as infection, asymmetry or a result that differs from expectations. Ask for a detailed assessment of your facial structure at the first consultation.
