Flying after surgery: when is it safe and what to watch for

The timing of the flight home after treatment depends on the type of procedure and on your personal situation, so the flight date should be planned with your physician before treatment.

Why care is needed

  • Immobility on long flights can raise the risk of clots (deep vein thrombosis); after surgery this risk can matter even more.
  • Cabin pressure and dryness can cause discomfort after some procedures.
  • Swelling, pain and conditions needing dressings affect comfort in flight.

General approach

  • After some minor procedures, flying soon may be possible; major surgery may call for a longer wait.
  • The physician gives guidance on fitness to fly after a follow-up examination.

During and before the flight

  • Use the compression stockings or medication your physician recommends.
  • Walk often, do leg exercises and drink water.
  • Wear comfortable clothes and avoid lifting luggage.
  • Carry your medication and reports in your hand luggage.

Only your physician can give you personal advice on flight timing.
