Rhinoplasty recovery: what to expect week by week

Recovery from rhinoplasty moves through several stages. Swelling can take a long time to settle completely, so patience is part of the process. The order below is a general outline; your physician's instructions apply.

The first days

  • Swelling and bruising around the nose and eyes are common.
  • A blocked feeling inside the nose is normal; you breathe through the mouth.
  • Sleeping with the head raised and applying cold as your physician advises can help.

The first week

  • The splint, bandage and any packing are removed on the days your physician sets.
  • Bruising usually fades visibly in this period.
  • Plan your days without blowing your nose and without pressure from objects such as glasses.

The first month

  • Heavy exercise, activities with a risk of impact and hot environments are postponed.
  • Sun protection matters.
  • A return to daily tasks and work usually begins in this range; the time depends on the person.

The following months

Swelling at the tip of the nose is among the last to settle. The final shape develops over months, in most people around a year. The appearance can change during this time.

When to call the physician

Contact the clinic without delay for increasing pain, fever, uncontrolled bleeding or marked difficulty breathing.
